Event: The life and work of revered journalist U Sein Win

Ludu Sein Win, the revered journalist and human rights activist who died in 2012, is a household name in Myanmar, known for his work as Yangon correspondent for Mandalay’s Ludu newspaper. He spent 11 years in prison under the former ruling military junta.

In his lesser-known personal life, he was a beloved neighbor. The residents of his building – at #491 to #501 Merchant Road – considered him a wise mentor. According to the people behind a new exhibition about his life and work, they consulted him on problems ranging from unruly children to roof upkeep.

His former home, a colonial building recently restored to its former glory by nonprofit Turquoise Mountain, has been opened to the public as part of the Living Restoration exhibition. From Tuesday, Ludu Sein Win: A Reflection, a curated exhibition by Aung Soe Min, the man behind the Pansodan Gallery Art Network, will be on display.

To celebrate the opening, on Tuesday morning, poets and writers will gather to talk about his life (all in Myanmar language). In the evening, another opening will be held without speakers.

Ludu Sein Win: A Reflection opens on July 26 at 11am and then again at 5pm. It is located at #491 Merchant Road. See the Facebook event.
