Earlier today, police confirmed that Myint Swe, the man who allegedly hired the gunman who shot and killed Ko Ni on Sunday, was arrested in Kayin State’s Myawaddy District and was being transported to the Mingaladon Township police station in Yangon.
However, conflicting reports from several different media outlets have surfaced, suggesting that the authorities themselves are unsure of whether Myint Swe is truly in custody.
Coconuts Yangon contacted an officer from the Myawaddy District police station, who claimed that Myint Swe had been arrested yesterday; a similar statement was reported by Democratic Voice of Burma and News Watch, the latter of which quoted an official from the Kayin State Police.
However, another official from the Kayin State Police told Eleven that the reports were simply rumors and that Myint Swe was not in custody; an officer from the Hpa-An police station also told Coconuts Yangon that he believes Myint Swe is not in custody.
Coconuts Yangon also contacted both the Mingaladon police station and an official from the Yangon Region Police Force, neither of whom were able to confirm or deny the news of Myint Swe’s arrest.
As such, it remains unclear as to whether or not Myint Swe is in custody.
AFP reporter Jerome Taylor also tweeted of rumors that police have been mistakenly arresting several men named Myint Swe, which is a common Myanmar name. However, this is unconfirmed.
@JonahFisherBBC Also rumours cops picking up lots of people named Myint Swe – of which there is no shortage in Myanmar!
