Fighting resumes near Muse

Yesterday afternoon, fighting erupted near the 105-mile Trade Zone located in northern Shan State’s Muse township.

According to the Muse District’s Administration Office, the conflict only last a few hours, between 2pm and 5pm.

Last month, over 3,000 people were displaced and 10 killed when clashes between the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Defense Services) and the Northern Allies —made up of the ethnic armed force groups KIA, TNLA and MNDAA — took place in Muse.

The region had began to re-stabilize following the military’s win after five days of fighting, but residents worried that yesterday’s clashes would bring about another period of violence and instability.

Lay Myint, a resident near the trade zone told 7Day Daily, “I heard 17 continuous explosions that were set off by heavy artillery. We are scared and feel like we have nowhere to stay. I don’t want this to happen again in residential areas.”

However, administrator Kyaw Htun of Muse District has reassured citizens that the recent fighting took place farther away in Nant Taung village, and should the violence approach Muse, they will have support weaponry from the trade zone’s western hills.
