Capital Hypermarket, located in Dawpon Township, reopened today after a series of small explosions that took place yesterday evening around 5:45 pm.
Reports say that there were four explosions in total. Two took place on the ground floor, while another two went off on the upper level.
Earlier in the day, there had been clashes in a town on the northern border between Myanmar and China, which had resulted in two civilian casualties.
The conflicts were between the military and four ethnic armed groups, including the influential Kachin Independence Army.
Some were worried that the explosions were related to the fighting.
However, a member of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, one of the ethnic groups involved in the fighting, denied their party’s involvement in the bombings.
“We are men. We fight openly”, said spokesman Phone Win Naing, according to AFP.
At a press conference today, the supermarket’s manager Daw Thwel Thwel Moe told journalists, “I’m sad about what happened. But the investigators have said that there is no danger here. We will reopen because it is safe and secure.”
Customers, however, didn’t share her confidence. According to a shopkeeper at one of the market’s stores, there were only a few customers today.
Capital representatives at the press conference also clarified that the explosions were not caused by bombs.
‘We know that they were handmade explosives, but we can’t give details as we’re not experts’, said Daw Thwel Thwel Moe.
The bomb squad has told 7Day Media that the explosives were probably made by putting a certain type of gas inside soda cans.
The Dawpon police station has opened a case under the Explosive Substances Act.
Authorities have confirmed that there were no casualties.
