Yangon bars are holding a ‘Naga Hour’ in aid of measles-stricken villages

As if you needed any more incentive for Friday drinks.

A collective of Yangon bars and restaurants are holding a ‘Naga Hour’ at the end of the working week to raise funds for villages stricken by a measles outbreak in northwestern Myanmar.

More than 40 people – mostly children – have died in recent weeks after contracting the illness in the remote Naga Self-Administered Zone. Getting aid to the area has been a struggle as seasonal rains have rendered the roads near impassable.

Venues participating in the Naga Hour, held between 7pm and 8pm Friday, have promised to donate all proceeds to the Council of Naga Affairs, which will keep records of the purchases for public viewing.

The aim, according to campaign founder Adam Nicholas, is to raise $20,000 to help buy medicine, food, water, vitamins, gas and other essentials for the impoverished communities affected.

The restaurants and bars taking part are: Parami Pizza, Gekko, Tin Tin and Union, of the 57 Below hospitality empire, and Port Autonomy by Pun & Projects.

At Parami, 50 per cent of the sales of Parami and Favorita pizzas will go to the campaign, and glasses of Prosecco will go for K5,000. Gekko is offering K5,000 mojitos and Tin Tin is selling K5,000 margaritas.

At Union, Heineken will be on draught and there will be two special signature cocktails for K5,000 each.

For those who aren’t in Yangon but want to donate, there’s a crowdfunding page here.
