Myanmar MPs donate money to help flood victims

Heavy rains in recent days have caused floods in several regions, forcing residents to leave their homes and abandon property (and putting animals at risk too).

Political leaders are responding to the urgency in different ways.

President Htin Kyaw apologized to flood victims and traveled to Magwe on Monday to help oversee relief efforts there.

And most recently, the 426 lawmakers in the Lower House agreed to donate just under $20 each to help, the Voice reported. It’s their daily stipend in the capital.

Flooding in Myanmar is an annual problem and most years see widespread volunteer and donation efforts in response, helping cement the largely Buddhist country’s reputation as one of the most generous in global giving indexes.
