Photos: Extreme flooding in Mandalay leaves university campus underwater

Severe flooding in Mandalay Region has today left areas on the outskirts of the city underwater, including the Yadarnapon university campus.

After heavy rain, the Irrawaddy River burst its banks at around 10am this morning, according to the Mandalay City Development Committee.

Photos posted to the MCDC Facebook page showed residents attempting to put up sandbags.

More than 35,000 people living in low-lying areas have been urgently relocated from Mandalay, Sagaing and Magwe Divisions, along with thousands of animals.

Leading forecaster Htun Lwin has warned of heavy rain across other areas of the country, including coastal regions and the Irrawaddy Delta, within the week.
