Thousands of police to deploy for Martyrs’ Day in Yangon

Police will beef up security in Yangon for Myanmar’s upcoming events on Martyrs’ Day.

Falling every year on July 19, the day commemorates the assassination of nine people, including independence hero Aung San, on the same date in 1947 at the Secretariat in Yangon.

Approximately 3,000 police officers will be out in force on July 19, which typically includes appearances by senior officials.

“We will completely take care of security because not only state officials but also the public from different areas of the country will come and pay their respects at Martyr’s Hill,” Yangon Region senior police official Mya Win was quoted as saying in the Voice.

The number represents an increase from last year, according to the Voice. There will be security at the hill and the Secretariat itself (which should be open to the public like last year), Yangon toll gates and Shwedagon Pagoda.
