Govt sues Premier Coffee over alleged labor abuses

Hundreds of factory workers producing coffee for popular Myanmar brand Premier Coffee have accused the company of labor abuses including forced unpaid overtime and banned vacation.

The government’s Workshop and Labor Department sued the firm under sections 14A and Act 85 of the 1951 Workshop Act at Hlaing Thayar Township court on June 28.

“We’ll keep working for the laborers who were disadvantaged,” Chit Paw, deputy manager of the department, told The Voice.

If found guilty, representatives of Premier Coffee could face up to three months imprisonment, a fine, or both. The company could not be immediately reached for comment.
