La Nina, stormy sister to El Nino, will hit Myanmar in September: weather expert

After weeks of record-breaking heat, Myanmar has finally waved goodbye to the weather phenomenon El Nino. But now, a leading forecaster says, we should brace for its stormy sister, La Nina, expected to bring severe weather and floods from September.

“We can say that El Nino has finished in the beginning of June,” Dr Tun Lwin, former head of the meteorology department, told 7 Day News Journal. “La Nina will come in September. There will be middling weather during the next three months. We can’t exactly forecast about these three months.”

Tun Lwin predicted the weather phenomenon would bring an increased number of storms.

“La Nina can reduce heat and increase coldness with lots of rain,” he said. “A lot of storms can hppen. Flood and storms can happen.”

Myanmar’s rainy season typically stretches from May until October. But forecasters say a strong La Nina effect could make the cold, wet weather much more severe.

According to an article in the New Straits Times, Malaysia is bracing for up to 12 months of rain.

Last year, severe flooding in Myanmar claimed more than 100 lives, devastating hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland and destroying houses.
