Yangon MP floats new idea to ease city traffic: water taxis

Just think about it for a minute. Yangon has too much traffic. Yangon has creeks and rivers.

The connection is so obvious it hurts.

WATER TAXIS!

In a discussion on traffic among parliamentarians on Thursday, MP Daw Thida Maung made a splash with the fresh idea.

“If water taxis could be a service that runs on time and looks nicely decorated, people will be interested in taking them,” she said, according to the Myanmar Times.

Yangon’s streets are drowning in bus lines, a problem Aung San Suu Kyi’s new regional government is attempting to reduce.

Perhaps these seaworthy vessels could take the place of the bulky bus lines.

And hey, it’s been done before.

“The former regional government implemented water taxis in some townships but the project was stopped because of a lack of profits,” the MP was quoted as saying.

Yangon does have ferries carrying passengers along some larger waterways, but where would this inner-city water line go?

Thida Maung proposed a route through Yangon’s Nga Moe Yeik creek.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like many were on board with the whole water taxi plan.

But here’s hoping it leaves port and sails into reality.
