Myanmar climbers approach Everest ‘Dead Zone’

Three Myanmar climbers attempting to be the first to summit Mount Everest are destined for the notorious ‘Dead Zone’, as they near the top of the world’s highest peak.

Nyi Nyi Aung, Win Ko Ko and Pyae Phyoe Aung reached Camp 3, at 23,625 feet, on May 4, according to the Myanmar Hiking and Mountaineering Federation.

They then descended back to Base Camp for medical exams and training before attempting the trek to Camp 4, at 26,085 feet, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

The vicinity of the camp is known as Everest’s Dead Zone on account of its remoteness – rescue is far less likely there – and the altitude sickness it induces in many mountaineers.

The summit stands at 29,029 feet – almost the height of a passenger plane at cruising altitude.

The Myanmar team hopes to return home on June 6 – after planting the Myanmar flag on the top of the mountain.

On April 12, they posted a series of awesome photos from the slopes to celebrate Thingyan New Year.
