NLD plans memorial park for democracy veteran Win Tin

A memorial park will be built in honor of Win Tin, a writer and senior National League for Democracy official imprisoned and tortured for 19 years under the junta, the party has said.

NLD party patron Tin Oo made the announcement yesterday at an event held at Yangon’s Royal Rose Restaurant to mark two years since the democracy veteran’s death in 2014, according to The Voice.

“We will try to implement a space as a park for him, in order to honor him,” said Tin Oo, without naming a date or place.

Memorials for Win Tin were held all over the country, attracting many high-profile politicians and artists.

After many years as a newspaper editor, Win Tin helped form the NLD, alongside eight other political activists, in 1988. He was a close friend and confidante of its leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

In his 2010 memoir, What’s That? A Human Hell, he described the conditions of his imprisonment under the former military government, beginning in 1989. Most of his time was spent in solitary confinement, in a small cell previously used as a dog kennel. He suffered two heart attacks and was barely fed.

After his release in 2008, he continued to write columns and talk on the radio. He wore a blue prison shirt, in solidarity with Myanmar’s remaining political prisoners, until the day he died.
