Myanmar’s former president Thein Sein has become a monk

Myanmar’s former president Thein Sein is looking pretty good right now. After decades of military rule, he presided over an apparently smooth transition of power to Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD-led government at the start of this month. He’s been the subject of a couple of somewhat favorable profiles

Now, in a move bound to win respect in the majority Buddhist nation, the ex-premier yesterday entered the monkhood.

He will spend five days in the robes at Dhamma Dipati Monastery, near Pyin Oo Lwin, according to the Ministry of Information, which confirmed the news on its Facebook page today, after photos circulated on social media.

His monk name – a temporary moniker – is U Thandi Dhamma.

Working on his legacy? Or atoning for something? We may never know.
