Yangon has once again scored poorly in an annual survey of quality of life in cities around the world.
The Mercer 2016 Quality of Life study, released last month, placed the commercial capital 201st out of 230 cities around the world for the second year running.
The global human resources consulting firm took into consideration factors like politics, the environment, health, personal safety and transport.
Yangon was again sandwiched between Luanda, Angola (deemed preferable) and Karachi, Pakistan (a little worse).
Among the cities judged superior were Caracas, Venezuela, long deemed the ‘murder capital of the world’ as well as every other Southeast Asian capital. Dhaka, Bangladesh, came in at 214.
There was little movement at the top – with Vienna, Austria, keeping its first place position.
In fact, much of the rankings were exactly the same as last year. Which got us thinking: guys, have you even been to Yangon lately? Don’t you know we’ve got a KFC now?
The top five were:
1. Vienna, Austria
2. Zurich, Switzerland
3. Auckland, New Zealand
4. Munich, Germany
5. Vancouver, Canada
And the bottom five:
226. Khartoum, Sudan
227. Port-au-Prince, Haiti
228. Saa’na, Yemen
229. Bangui, Central African Republic
230. Baghdad, Iraq
