Myanmar’s new leaders will follow the “people’s desire” in deciding whether the controversial Myitsone Dam project will go ahead, a spokesperson for the National League for Democracy has said.
Beijing is pushing to restart the dam, which was suspended under the outgoing Thein Sein administration following popular opposition. As much as 90 per cent of the project’s power could have gone to China.
When asked what the NLD would do about the dam, Dr Zaw Myint Maung told The Voice: “We already talked about this. We will prioritize the people’s desire and our implementation will be based on that.”
