No more climbing on pagodas in Bagan after company films song and dance number on top of one

The days of viewing sunsets at Bagan, one of the most popular activities at the historic site, are about to be over.

As usual, some tourists messed things up for everybody.

The culprits were part of a medical company tour, according to the Myanmar Times, which cited an announcement on the Ministry of Culture’s Facebook page that says the ban starts March 1.

The February 22 statement did not specifically refer to the video or the company, but mentioned singing and dancing and improper dress, so it was easy to put 2 and 2 together.

“Mainly, people are getting onto the pagoda as they want to see the sunset,” a senior official with the ministry told Eleven. “We are not allowing this because of singing or dancing or it can be dangerous.”

To be fair, climbing all over ancient structures should have been banned a long time ago, so the offenders here might have done Bagan a favor.
