In Southeast Asia, it’s probably fair to judge how expat-ified a city is by how many Mexican restaurants there are.
By our count, there’s at least three in Yangon – most of which have opened in the past year. And, as of this weekend, there will be another.
Gringos Chilangos, set up in a colonial-era building on Bo Aung Kyaw Street, is holding its soft opening from Saturday.
According to the Facebook page, the two head chefs – genuine Mexicans – have been scouring the markets to find the ingredients needed to “recreate the taste of Distrito Federal in Yangon.”
The space itself looks pretty chic. There’s an open plan kitchen on the ground floor and long, cantina-style tables while upstairs features banquette seating.
Drinks look authentic and potent, like this Michelada Tamarindo, with a shot of tomato and a chili-lime salt rim.
