Myanmar has tightened security in its border areas following reports that several members of the Islamic State have traveled through neighboring Thailand, Eleven Media reported today.
Kyi Linn, chief of police for Tanintharyi Region, which has a 600-mile border with Thailand, said controls on gates and main roads have been increased and patrols boosted in major cities like Dawei and Myeik.
“We want passengers to take their ID cards when they are traveling in order to show their documents,” he said. “I want to say to people that if they see suspected strangers in their town, inform to the nearest police station.”
At the start of this month, Russian intelligence warned Thailand that 10 Syrians linked to the group entered the country between October 15 and 31 to carry out attacks.
Three have since been questioned and cleared but others are feared to be at large.
