Myanmar’s cell phone boom is now the world’s third biggest

Myanmar is behind only China and India when it comes to adding cell phone subscribers, according to an Ericsson report.

The Q1 2015 Mobility Report, quoted in the Myanmar Times, says the country has boosted its net subscription count by 5 million this quarter.

India’s base went up by 26 million and China increased its subscriptions by 8 million.

Here, the sector has experienced enormous growth since the government allowed international telecoms Ooredoo and Telenor into the market last year.

In Southeast Asia, 25 per cent of handsets are smartphones, according to a press release from the company.

There is now nearly one cell phone per person on the planet – the world has about 7.2 billion subscriptions, according to the Ericsson report.
