If you have disposable income and you live downtown and you like cheese, there’s cause for celebration.
Sharky’s, Yangon’s one-stop shop for gourmands, opened on Pansodan Street on Monday next to Rangoon Tea House, giving downtown its latest upscale eatery.
The new foodie on the block isn’t so new, of course. Sharky’s opened its first store in Yangon more than 10 years ago, and this outlet will be its fourth citywide.
All the usual Sharky’s stuff is there (the baked bread, the variety of locally-sourced, tasty and not very cheap cheeses, ice cream), and a restaurant is expected in around a month’s time.
Sharky’s locations are not the easiest to reach for downtown residents, so when the opportunity to open in the colonial-era building – it used to be a department store – on Pansodan arose earlier this year, the company seized it.
“We think it’s a great location, we love the building,” said a co-owner who would only be identified as “Jane.”
“Many of our customers are quite excited at having a place closer to where they live or work,” she said. “It will be something that we feel suits downtown.”
When asked what the restaurant would be offering, she said that it would be a “surprise that everyone is going to have to wait for.”
Sharky’s on Pansodan is open from 8am to 7pm, though hours may change.
